Hey first post, nice place.
I keep trying to add stuff to my collection and so far I've gotten errors on every figure. I tried the little Spychanger Jazz but I don't know exactly what model car he is so I put Sports car. And then when I went to submit I got an error.
So I went over to Henkei Grimlock and put it all the info then at the bottom I get to what region and I put Japan, Henkei, Cybertron, then another little box opens up and none of the options are for Grimlock, I hit submit anyway and I get this:
[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /nfs/c01/h06/mnt/44139/domains/shmax.com/html/mode/transformers/TrDatabase.class.php5 on line 925: Invalid argument supplied for foreach()

Fatal error! Please post the URL you were trying to view along with a short description of how to reproduce the problem in the forums.
So now I'm 2 for 2. None of the figures are going in. Do I really need to know exactly every little piece of information on each figure I own before I can build my database of my collection? I can't just say "Henkei Grimlock" and submit it and have it in my database. And do I need to take pictures of everyone of my figures? I really am very excited to finally have a database of my collection, hell I'm curious just to know how many I've actually got since I never counted them, but this is....getting frustrating and not very user friendly. I'm beginning to feel like I need to be an expert on each individual figure before I'm going to be able to make this work.
I mean I've got a stack of cardbacks like 6-8 inches high and I would think it would be easy to use those for the info to put in this database, but so far it's not working. And the thought of going through all these cardbacks and none of it working is kind of depressing.
Thanks for your time.

Edit: I've started adding them as 'Package' instead of 'figure' though none of my stuff is MISB, it's all MIB. But I think it's working, not sure yet. Seems like Jazz took since I didn't get any errors, but I still don't see him showing up in the collection. And really knowing what year all these figures were released is going to be hard. I'm really hoping this doesn't turn out to be more trouble then it's worth. I just can't believe people are supposed to know every little detail about a figure like this. Not trying to whine but jeez, I just wanted to input names, factions, mold size (deluxe, voyager, etc.) line (animated, universe) and have this all be relatively easy. So far it's really not, and with no 'Help' of 'FAQ' sections anywhere that I can see, I'm really kind of floundering here.
Edit: Well I've added legends/spychanger Autobot Jazz, Henkei Grimlock, and Hasbro Universe Cyclonus *(which doesn't have a UPC btw) and so far none of this seems to be showing up. It'll say "added" after I click submit, but my collection still shows zero entries. I think I'm gonna give up for the night, this is just getting really frustrating.
Whoops, little misunderstanding, here. To add a toy to your collection, all you have to do is find it in the database (either by searching, or just browsing), and then click the little "Add to my Collection" link. And that's it! The links you've been using are for adding information to the database. I'll clean those up, and look into the errors you posted. Thanks for posting, and good luck!

Lol, man I didn't know it was that easy. I just cleaned up all my cardbacks and instructions too, guess I'll get them out and give it another shot.
Thanks man, I really was getting frustrated.
you know a FAQ or something I think might make things easier for some people, people like me who can be dense and always seem to take the hard road. (while thinking it's the easy road. )
You're absolutely right, and you're not the first to make this mistake. I'll start thinking about ways to make it more clear. In the meantime, if you have cardbacks and instruction booklets, I'll do my usual duty and mention that we're always looking for UPC numbers from packages (for now, only mods can update exising records, but you can post any you find in the forums and we'll put 'em in--a user-submitted modification system is in the planning stages), and of course, PHOTOS of toys, particularly accessories. Got a camera? Got some time?

Hmm, do got camera and do got time, lol. I've kept the cardbacks of about 99% of the figures I have, some of them though like Universe Cyclonus don't seem to have a UPC, or the Henkei's of course.
I think I've got it going now and have successfully added some figures to my collection. Thanks again, I'm sure I'll bug you some more if I've got any more questions.
Yep, looks like you're really on a roll. I see you have a sealed MA-04 Autobot Jazz... mmm, sure could use a photo for that 'un (fair warning--if you were frustrated by your first attempts at building your collection, wait 'til you see our photo guidelines). As for Henkei's, do they not have UPCs? I have a variety of Japanese retail-bought toys here, and they all have bar codes (the Japanese upc format is a little different from the American ones, but the system supports it).

How do I delete something from my collection. For example putting in Japan/movie Jazz by accident instead of USA one?

You should see the word "remove" on each item row when editing your collection. Does it not work?
I don't see remove anywhere. I put Europe Megatron and Japan Jazz by mistake and want to correct them.
Gonna try and see if I can get my whole collection in tonight. This is really cool now that I'm getting it right. This is pretty much exactly what I've been wanting for my collection for awhile now.
Ah, you have to be in either "Edit Collection" mode (there's a link in the "Membership" box), or regular browsing. The "View Collection" is non-editable for now (though that may change at some point). Glad you're enjoying the site--it's taken about 2 and a half years of intense work to get it where it is. If you want to spread the love, just spread the word (use the sig in any forums you visit, tell your friends, make your own bumper sticker, etc). Or you can submit some photos (no, I never shut up about photos). =)

ok I think I got it. I got rid of the 2 I was trying to change. I guess when I get them all in there I can look at my collection and see if I can offer photos of any that are missing. I take pretty decent photos I can tell by the pics I've seen you want well lite, white background, minimal to no shadows, close ups, focused, etc.
And I am enjoying the site, thanks for the time and work you've obviously put alot into it. I really like the little box that pops up on the right hand side with little facts about my collection. (though I find it hard to believe my Sentinel Prime is worth more then any of my Encores, lol)
It's really neat though. I can see I'm not gonna be sleeping tonight because I'll keep thinking, "just one more entry" until they're all in there.
Way ahead of ya:
http://www.shmax.com/View_Collection/1/483?psub=1 (http://www.shmax.com/View_Collection/1/483?psub=1)
You can access this link at any time by clicking on the "Photos you can provide" link in the "Membership" box. You're right about the photos--you'll generally need to build a "photo box" out of foam core or white cardboard and get yourself a couple of bright clip-on lights or desk lamps. It's all discussed to death in the photo guidelines (http://www.shmax.com/Photo_Guidelines) links, but you can also just discuss it in the forums. Engledogg has become something of an expert, and I can usually suggest some tips.
Don't forget you can bid photos for a free "Mickey Mouse" transformer. Don't bid in this thread--do it in the main contest thread (http://www.shmax.com/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=333)--but I think the current bid is 250. I have a feeling you have enough parts 'n pieces to top that, so keep it in mind.

thanks man, this has been fun. Glad I saw that thread today on The Allspark to remind me of this place.
Almost done, just gotta figure out who the hell these 3 loose mini-cons are and I think I've got them all in there.
250 photos for the Mickey? Dang that's alot of photos, lol. I'll be happy to contribute what I can, I noticed putting stuff in tonight that a few of the figures I put in didn't have photos.
as for accessories, yes, I've got a box FULL of missiles, guns, minicons and assorted stuff. I can't seem to throw anything out. I still have the instructions for Brakedown and Doomlock (found them tonight while doing this) and I haven't had those figures in over a year and a half. Tonight I actually learned what a packrat I am with these figures.
oh yeah, when I click 'summary' 'details' or 'gallery' in my collection, nothing seems to change.

Try just doing a search. If it's a blue and yellow speedboat, search for "blue yellow speedboat". Too many results? Try "blue yellow speedboat mini-con". You'll get the idea. Amaze your friends.

Yes and no. Remember that each missile, fist, etc counts as one photo. If you have some big fussy toy like Metroplex or one of those combiner toys, that's 10 percent right there. And it goes pretty fast once you have a photo box set up. If you have all your toys close at hand, you could conceivably snap 'em all in one day, and post 'em all in the next (provided you really get on a roll, and have a fast connection).
I'll be happy to contribute what I can, I noticed putting stuff in tonight that a few of the figures I put in didn't have photos.
Use the link I gave you! Hmm, it would be close. I'll have to write a little code to calculate exactly how many photos we can squeeze out of a collection, but I just sort of eyeballed it and you're right around the 300 mark. I'll get back to you on that after I do a little crunching.

Pshaw, why would you want to throw any of that stuff away? What else are you going to fill your drawers with? But if these parts are in addition to your collection proper, then 300 should be a breeze. The trouble is that we're pretty strict about making sure that a part photo is indeed of THAT photo, and not just a guess. But if you think you can remember what went with what, all is well.
Whoops, yeah, I keep forgetting to do something about that. Just ignore it for now. I've got a few other hot issues to deal with now, but I'll get to that soon.
oh yeah, when I click 'summary' 'details' or 'gallery' in my collection, nothing seems to change.
When I click 'photos you can provide' it just shows my collection. Am I missing something?
What it's doing is showing only items in your collection that we need photos for. It just so happens that we need at least one photo from pretty much everything in your collection. THe catch is that you can't see by looking at the list which parts within each collected item need the photos. I'll do something about that very soon...
When I click 'photos you can provide' it just shows my collection. Am I missing something?
Oh ok. So I click on each one and see which pictures are missing. Gotcha.
I saw in the other thread that it's not just a Mickey Mouse you're offering but an Alternity Convoy? There's a choice of prize?
Cuz uh, you know for an Alternity Convoy I can get you all the pics of what I own within the next few days. HA HA HA....no...seriously.
Mickey was no motivation, for Convoy I'll get you pics by Saturday. :)
Which color is he btw? isn't there like Blue, Red, Silver and Black?
Well, I was sort of thinking of doing a proper "contest" for the Alternity and other stuff, such that the top 4 or 5 winners get to choose which item they want. It's the "Ultimate Metal Silver" version. I'll have to think about how best to handle this--if you're seriously willing to provide photos of
every single figure and part we need photos of from your collection, that's definitely something to consider. Tell ya what, why don't you try a few sample pics. If they're hands-down awesome, ie. as good as these (http://www.shmax.com/Database/1?psub=88&tab=1&part_filter=7), then I'll agree to it (hint: read the photo guidelines. The guy that took the pictures in that list wrote the tutorial).
Oh ok. So I click on each one and see which pictures are missing. Gotcha.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I can get pics close to that, I just need a white board. For stuff like a missile I'm sure a super bright white piece of paper with the missile laying on it will do nicely. I'm pretty decent at taking pics I've been doing it for awhile.
I know not as bright as you'd like and there's shadow, plus the camera wasn't mounted so there's a wee bit of blur, but that's just a quick pic to let you know I can at least hold a camera, lol.
Only thing that worries me is after clicking that link it pulls up my collection, and I looked through it, yeah alot of the japanese stuff you don't really have any pictures of, so I could get those for you no problem. But it's also showing animated characters like they needs pics, but when I click them they have all the pics already, so why is it saying it needs pics? I'd hate to take tons of pics and then find out that alot of the figures it's showing me you need, you don't actually need.
I'm serious though that I can devote alot of time in the next say 2 weeks to taking pictures. I'm self employed.
and taking pics to earn a Silver Convoy would be a fun distraction from the studio work I've been doing. I could use a break anyway.
Let me know, seriously I'll jump on it tomorrow and work through to Saturday. (gotta work on Saturday.) Then I could give you next week Tues-Fri if I have to.
Yes, I would very much like a Convoy to add to the collection, lol. Just let me know. I'm still unclear on the rules and the bids and stuff. I know it started at 100 and went to like 300. I'm not sure if it's a contest or what. I'd hate to take 299 pics and then someone else beats me at the last second.
But I've got lights, I can get some board, and I can get you your pics very quickly if you're interested. I just needed the proper motivation, lol. Mickey wasn't doing it.
oh and I read the pics tutorial. Bright background, long exposure, no seams, focused, mount the camera, 2 lights one behind and one in front, minimal to no shadow. Got it, no problem.
Just need to learn how to brighten or whatever you were saying with photoshop, though hopefully if I get a good enough pic with the background curving up, I might not need to tweak them.
I love the pose, but that pic would get rejected, even if it weren't for a "contest". We need sharper detail, better focus, a pure white background, everything you already mentioned. I'll also add that we don't
hate shadows--in fact they add depth and class--but they need to be soft and subtle, and not fight with the figure for attention. We also like for them to fall flat on the floor. Yours looks like it's starting to crawl up the wall.
As for your collection, remember that we need photos for the accessories as well as the figures themselves. Every toy in that list is missing
something, be it an instruction book, a missile, or a false mustache. As for the rules, we'd be doing this one "off the books". You agree to provide one perfect photo of every part and figure that we need shots of that you have available to you (I'm assuming we're talking about approx. 300 photos--we'll confirm that in the next day or two after I write a little code), and I agree to send you the toy. But that's assuming you can prove you can take a perfect photo. It ain't easy, and Engledogg and I are pickier than the little old ladies at a rose-judging contest. We'll be approving or rejecting each and every single one, and only the approved ones count.

man, well 300 is alot. But I'll tell you what. I'll start taking pics today after I get some rest, and I'll just start posting them in here or I'll start another thread. That way I can host them and you can pick and choose. Don't know if I can get all 300 in the next week, but I will make it a priority/full time thing, taking pics everyday except for the days that I have to work. Usually Mondays and Saturdays depending on how I schedule things. You agree to hold that Silver Convoy for me, and I'll agree to take all the pics you need until you're satisfied, hopefully I can get it all done within a week or two. I'm still pretty sure some of the animated figures it was saying needed pictures already had pics of everything, but I'll check again. My only worry is that I don't actually have 300 things that you need pics of. I do have everything listed in my collection, and they're all complete, so maybe I do.
But yeah, I'll start today with Encore Prime and Megatron, the Henkei figures and things I know for a fact you need pics of and we'll see how it goes. Looking forward to it, it should be fun.
and when I win the Silver Convoy,....I'll take some pics of that too!
Sounds good, but don't post them in here--use the links on the details pages for each item, that's what they're there for. The moderators have an interface for reviewing and approving photos, so no worries. I love that you're eager to dive right in, but you may want to wait until I can compute an accurate tally of the photos we can pull from your collection. If it turns out to be 200 or something, we'd have to rethink this. I appreciate your enthusiasm--wish we had more of ya.

I just did a quick modification--now when you view the "Photos you can provide" link, a little red exclamation mark appears next to parts that need photos. I had another look at your collection, counting the marks, and I only came up with 225. Any ideas?

Idk, 225 still seems like alot to me, lol. Especially if you're as famous for rejecting photos as you say there's still a good chance I could end up taking 300 pictures just to get you the 225 you like. That'd be like what, 10 cents or 5 cents a picture? Lol. It'd still be a very good deal in your favor. Breaking it down like that is kind of sad actually. :?
Another thing I just thought of is that I've got 4 figures that've been customized/repainted. Movie Voyager Prime and Megs, Movie Dreadwing, and Cybertron Leader Prime. Not sure what pics of those 4 figures you'd want or whether the customizing effects that, I have to check the collection and see what pics you want of those figures.
Really cool that you were able to readjust the sites software like that. I'm always impressed when people can program, I tried to learn java and C++ but decided the world would be a better place if I stick with music and art for my living, lol.
So I guess the balls in your court, just let me know, I can start on it right now.
just checked the gallery, the red exclamation marks work brilliantly. However now the pics look like this:
Doubt you want that, just thought I'd point it out.
and checked on Dreadwing and stuff, about the customizing. I don't think they'll be effected since it's the accessories you want pics of and I didn't paint those really. Just the figures. I'm gonna take a few test photos here in a minute to check the lighting and all, if we can't come to an agreement that's cool, I'll still see what I can do to get you the pics that you need. You've provided me a service in being able to database my collection, I don't mind doing what I can to help repay the favor.
Been taking some test pics, not 100% thrilled with how they've been coming out. Getting that blinding white background with minimal shadows is trickier then I thought it'd be. However I dig a challenge and am gonna keep working at it. Camera battery died though so I gotta take a break, lol.
I need a whiter background too. I thought what I had was white, but the camera picks up subtle yellows that ruin it for me. I need BLINDING WHITE!!!! Gonna try and pick up some foam core or bright white poster board tonight.
also was surprised that trying a bunch of different lightbulbs also made such a difference. Some bulbs just seem to have more 'yellow' in the light they give out. Who knew? I've been taking pics of my artwork for years and never realized just how much the light was adding or subtracting color.
