"Robots in Disguise", the packaging used to say. It doesn't say that anymore, does it? I mean just look at this shot of Striker Optimus from Highprime--if there's a place on Earth where such a vehicle would blend in, I want to know about it so I can make sure not to cut anyone off the next time I'm passing through. I get the feeling that somewhere, someone in a meeting room--and this would have happened long ago--said "you know what? The hell with it. Nobody cares if the robot folds up into a realistic boring sedan anymore. Let's go big, let's go weird, and tell the design staff that they will get a 10% bonus for every weapon larger than a Baby Ruth they can cram on there." That man's name? Edgar J. Awesome.

If it wasn't so damn expensive, I'd love to own this figure. It's the only DotM Optimus I like.

Its a beautiful toy.  It just fundamentally misses the point of both "Transformers - Robots in Disguise" and "Autobot".

I just had this sudden impulse to buy one myself, and would have, but if this lousy site can be trusted, it's only available in Japan..? True or false? Also, maybe I shouldn't buy one that has already been photo'd. Is there a black, clear, chrome, candy-coated or otherwise special version on the horizon?

Yeah, Japan or import specialty only.  No other version that I've heard of yet, but I'm sure they'll gold chrome the shit out of it in a month or 6.
