I have had a go at trying to take photos of the Bagged Legend Class Megatron I have mentioned elsewhere on the forum, and here is the best I have been able to do so far...

Obvious not good enough quality for the database here...but can anyone give me tips to improve please?

Thanks in advance for people's thoughts on my rubbish photography! 8)

Not to worry, that's about how all our first attempts look. You may be able to get away without building a light box (you'd be the first!), but here's a few things you can try short of that:

- use brighter, whiter lights. I don't know if you have them in the UK, but we usually use 150W GE "Reveal" bulbs
- try not to position them so far front (to avoid the harsh specular). If you build a box, point the lights at the subject through the walls of the box (which are generally made of cloth or vinyl)
- adjust your camera's "white balance" to help with the yellowish tinge. You'll probably want the "tungsten" preset, if it has one
- lower your ISO setting a bit to help with the slightly mealy texture
- bring your subject forward, away from the back wall, so we don't see a wall shadow (shadows must fall on the floor)
- increase your exposure setting... neighborhood of 1.0

That oughta be enough to get you started! I'm off to work, but in the meantime you might post a picture of whatever it is you're using for a light box, as well as the make and model of your camera.

More in 8 hours!

I tried making a lightbox and failed...so trashed it, but I have invested in a photographer's light tent, which should do the same thing as the lightbox.

I hope to have this by the end of next week at the latest, and then hope to have some pics for you guys very soon!

I have got hold of my new camera, got hold of my light tent, but don't seem to be getting too good a shot...here are the best 3 photos I have done so far:

I'm certain they would be rejected, but I'm not sure what else to do...any tips please good people?

Not terrible at all! Your first mistake is probably choosing the bagged toy as your first subject--the baggies are notoriously difficult to shoot, and none of us have ever really mastered it. That said, I think you did a pretty good job of it. But I think we should start off by debugging the head shot, and go from there. I'll just dive right in:

1. Check your camera's ISO setting. Either set it to a lower value (such as 100), or do a longer exposure. That should help reduce the grainy, mealy quality.

2. Shoot at a higher resolution. Even if you plan to reduce it later, shooting at a higher initial resolution will help pick up sharper detail.

3. Put your principle light directly overhead, so that the shadow pools under the part instead of stretching off into the background.

4. If your camera has it, switch on "macro mode". Look for a little icon that looks like a flower.

5. Use a tripod. Then you can use the camera's timer in conjunction with longer exposures to really bake in the color and blast the whites.

I'll stop there. I think your first priority should be to reduce the graininess; once you have that, you'll be well on your way.

Hope that helps...

Ah, I think I know where I may have gone wrong, I thought the ISO had to be higher, I had it at 1,000!

Thanks for the advice, I just hope you guys don't get narked at me asking so many questions all the time!

Will try some more photos later today .

Oh, but you do get points! The very best kind, in fact--karmic points! You have to wait until you die to turn them in, of course, and at that point it's too late to spend them, but ah, hmm. Maybe photos are the way to go, after all.

And those karma points make me feel all fuzzy inside :cD

OK, please don't laugh at me but it appears that I had COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN that I had a tripod for my camera!  I'm really not sure how that happened..... *wonders if losing marbles!*

I need to get some sheets of brilliant white paper from local art store, and then I will try yet again.
