I got my signature removed on me at TFW because it was over 40KB in size:

It does indeed clock in above that (barely) but I notice other users there have their Shmax signatures that are less than 40KB. it this caused by the amount of different items I have? Is there a way to make it smaller at all?

I'll work on making it smaller. Yes, some are larger than others because of the number of pages involved. I think what I may have to do is show only "Fun Facts" for sigs that otherwise go over 40k...

yeah... that can work. Maybe have a 'lite' version of the signature so people who use other website without such restrictions won't have to loose out the other functionality. Since you'll be getting rid of the collection pages, maybe add figure count to the fun facts page.

Found a way to make it smaller. I saved my signature and opened it up in FW to edit it. Then I saw something right away!

Does it look any different? Nay, but this is 31KB instead of the other being 49KB. The only thing I did was change it from Alpha Transparency to No Transparency!

If you wanted to make it even smaller, you could get rid of the gradient in the content section and make it a solid color.

Interesting. Mind trying it on one of the mondo-huge ones, like Engledogg's?

Looking at it now, it seems to not be directly related to transparency, but perhaps the export settings in FW. So it may have to do with the GIF format or compression settings. I didn't notice it when I changed mine... or to say I didn't look at the file size until AFTER I changed it to no transparency... so I missed that. Here is a comparison, transparency setting is on the bottom left of each image, file size is the top right.

So you can see there is basically little difference in the transparency setting... it must be somewhere else.

Ah, very interesting, thank you. What size did you wind up with Engledogg's after re-exporting?

I didn't end up doing the export. if I do, it would be one of the sizes shown in those screenshots. So it did bring it down by about half.

Interesting, sounds like you're onto something. I'll do a little research and see if I can figure out how they're doing it. Thanks!

bump--need to follow up on the possibility of doing better GIF compression

Let's try lowering the number of colors down to 128; it doesn't lower the picture quality much, and the image sizes go down quite a bit. The most basic sig gets down to under 40k.
