So far I still haven't figured it out. The database is fine. If I isolate the code that updates the record, it works fine. But when I put it all together, it blows up. I've been at it all weekend and gotten nowhere, so I'm going to put it on hold for a while and go back to working on my Secret Evil Plan. Once I get it solved I'll do my best to restore the corrupted data from backup.

Working on it at a macro level. A friend of mine is preparing a virtual machine which closely mirrors the live server. With luck, once I have that I'll be able to troubleshoot the issue a little more easily.
