Last night I finished photographing Constructicon Devastator, and while I was at it I made some modifications to my box, lighting, and camera settings. Just thought I'd share the details.
- Light Box mods
- Cut a hole in the top of the box, covered it in cloth, and moved the 200W light up there. I had to tape an extra piece of foam core up there to clip the light to, so that it wouldn't burn the house down.
- Taped a long sheet of poster paper to the back wall and let it run down the back and forward to the front of the box to eliminate the "seam" created where the rear wall meets the floor.
- Lighting mods
- As mentioned, I moved the 200W light up to the top of the scene, and I filled its vacancy with a 150W GE Reveal bulb. So I now have 200W, 150W, and 75W GE bulbs shining on the box, which works great as long as you don't mind fried eyeballs.
- Camera Settings
- With the increased light, I was able to dial back the camera's exposure setting to 0.7.
- Post-Processing
- With the addition of the 3rd light and the rear wall curve, the only thing I have to do in Photoshop is boost the white levels a little, and bump the contrast a touch. No erasing.
