Folks, it may seem like I've merely been sitting on my butt, watching tv, and munching on Sea Salt and Pepper potato chips, and that may be true, but--wait, hang on (*munch munch*)--but I've also been horrifically busy with the site. We're in one of those periods now where it doesn't seem like much is happening, but I've spent the last few weeks on a feature that is itself only a small part of a much larger feature, but even all by itself it's damned nifty.

In short, I've completely replaced the old auction-matching system with a new algorithm that may just be the hottest thing since razor burn. You should now be noticing far fewer "false positives" in the auction listings; by that I mean that if you look up, say, G1 Powermaster Optimus Prime, you should see a good selection of auctions for just that item, and no pollution by vaguely similar items, such as Actionmaster Optimus Prime, or Commemorative edition Powermaster Optimus Prime. Furthermore, you won't see listings for little scrappy accessories, like fists, spare tires, stickers, and so on.

"How is this possible?!", you wail. Well, all I can say is that it's algorithmic, it's freakin' awesome, and it's automatic, meaning that no attendant is needed to be constantly policing the auctions as they come in.

Next you'll probably want to know where this is all leading. Fair enough. Well, remember all those joyous hours you spent clicking your collection into the database? Well, the BIG feature this is building up to is automatic collection appraisal. Because I now know what each toy eventually winds up selling for, and I know what toys you have in your collection, I'll soon be able to show you more or less exactly what your collection is worth on a day to day basis.

Yes, yes, I know--take a moment to let that sink in. Why don't you sit down over there, next to your pizza-box fort.

I'll make a more officially announcement when that's ready. Talk to ya then!

Do you use completed auctions only? Because that's the only way to gauge value off of eBay.

Also, while it would be more work/data, any plans to get prices for the parts and accessories, or is that too difficult to do automatically? Might be nice to know how much something like G1 combiner parts go for. I guess it would only be useful for people to find out how much they need to spend to complete their collections. Is your only intention for estimating values of complete items?

Yep, completed auctions only. The current auctions are shown on the details page for each package. As for parts, I'll probably add a section to the ebay listings one of these days. What I'd really like to have is a parts table that really tracks all the accessories properly, with photos, and an id system, and so on, but there's just no one around to enter the data (unless you um, want to volunteer). If the site ever takes off in a big way (meaning more than just me and the crickets in here), I'll get that going. Good enough?

Why not ask to use existing pictures from places like TFU.info? They already have a project like this, and as you know from my thread on the AllSpark, I hate big projects like these going on in parallel, doing the same work again for each similar project.
While I don't always LIKE the photos they take (of accessories, in this case), that's because they take submissions from different people. They try to be consistent in the quality and style of photos, but it obviously doesn't always work out.

I can't do photos. I have a nice camera, but I just don't have an amazing enough collection. I may have MOST of Beast Wars, but even there I don't have a complete collection. I've never been much of a completist.

Not a terrible idea, but I really don't like their photos, either. I'd really much rather have a set of moderators or devoted fans work on the project afresh. I know it's duplication of effort in a sense, but only as far as the photos go--the database end would have to be written anyway (I don't think tfu.info even has a database back end--it seems to be all hand-generated html, amazingly enough).

Well heck, I wouldn't expect any one member to tackle such a large project on their own. But it sounds like you have at least enough toys  to do some data entry and get the project off the ground. This is all far off in the future, of course. Fun to think about, though!
