Make the cookie tracking login last indefinitely.  I hate having to relogin every day  :)

We get reports of this every now and then, and I've never been able to figure out what the problem is. I have no issues with Chrome. Which browser are you using? One of these days I'll upgrade our forum software and see if that does anything. Apologies for the annoyance.

I am able to stay logged into the site for a longer period of time, but not the forum. if i stay on the site it is fine, but once I go to the forum, then go back to the site, I will be logged out. Also, the forum looks like it stores the login hash in a cookie, and if it doesn't match, you'll be logged out. This only is an issue for me (maybe others) because I use two different computers to go here.

I'm usually logged in all the time with no problems - unless my piece of crap Verizon router loses Internet due to an incoming call.  How convenient!

Anyhow, once I get that corrected, I always have to log back in to shmax.  Something to do with the IP address being different once I get the Internet back up and running...it'll be fine until the next loss of Verizon Internet.

I use Chrome & Firefox - same problem with each.  It remembers the login for a while, but eventually I have to relogin.  It usually happens when I check on the following day - so after several hours of inactivity.

Okay, well, maybe I'll see about updating our version of phpbb, and see if that helps. Stay tuned...

The cookies aren't expiring, that is for sure. Even the main site sees that I am logged in after a return visit a day later, however I am going to guess that the main site isn't using the entire set like the forum is. I want to guess that the SID is on a shorter timespan than the cookie is set to last. The cookie for login is set for 1 year. I have copied my SID from today, and to see what it looks like tomorrow. It should be the same as it is today, if it isn't, then this would explain why the forum would show me as logged out every day.

The forum appears to not check for the presence of a cookie prior to visiting the site again after 1 day. It replaced my cookie from yesterday's visit and generated a new SID. This was checked prior to login. I will not share my SIDs, since the new one I have will be good for the next 24 hours. I compared both cookie sets, and this is the only option that has changed from yesterday (except for date stamps) is phpbb3_bm58f_sid.

Thanks, Trip. Unfortunately there's not much I can do--I'm not going to start mucking about in 3rd-party code. What I can do, however, is upgrade our forums, and hope that the issue gets resolved. The version of phpbb that we're using is several years old, and we're definitely due for an update. So, I'll look into that over the next few nights.

Happens to me every single time. I use Chrome & Firefox (both are the up-to-date).

Hah, well I looking into it a bit this morning, and it turns out that it might actually be pretty painless. It'll still look the same, though, so we'll still have to shop around for a new skin.

You'll have to refresh my memory on the skin offer.

Progress update on updating the forums: not much. I tried running the update scripts on my local install last night to see if it would work, but I ran into conflicts with all the mods I've installed over the years. I have to decide if I want to try to manually resolve the conflicts, or clear all the mods out and just start fresh. I'll attack it again this weekend...

I'd also recommend that you do a parallel install on the live website after you test against your local install. By that I mean have it connect to the live database, but do not replace this forum right away. Do not publish the link to that install, and make sure to add that directory into your robots.txt so that it won't be indexed. Have your mods test things out in the test forum, and when it is good to go, then update the actual forum and then delete the parallel install. Otherwise, you'll end up with main forum downtime, unless the dream scenario of a perfect upgrade ends up happening. Another forum I am on (for business related purposes) had a bad update last year, I'd rather not relive it.

As far as the skin thing, I had sent you a PM quite awhile ago. As the forum says:

Ah, you want to cook up a skin. Sure, let's see what you've got! SOS was complaining a while back that the stock skin looks kind of cheesy and dated; no argument, here. All I ask is that you do your best to make it match with the rest of the site's aesthetic, and not to get carried away with Autobot symbols and other specific toyline branding--we still intend to expand the site to other toylines.  Let me finish the upgrade, then we'll see about getting you set up for development. Thanks, Trip.
