Just to prove that even I'm getting caught up in the fun, today's photo features the new light box I MacGyver'ed together last night. I made it out of two large pieces of foam core, one for the back, and the other split into halves for the floor and top piece. I used styrofoam posts for the supports, and draped the sides with satin-y fabric purloined from my sister's crafts table. The whole thing cost about $6, and is light and airy enough for even the most malnourished of nerds to tote in and out of the garage. For the lamps I used three GE Reveal bulbs; one 200W, one 150W, and one 60W. If you hold a boilermaker in your hand while looking at it's exactly like being on the main strip in Las Vegas. I've posted more details in a post in the Shutterbug Club forum.

Hey Shmax,
I'm digging the new photo boxes!!! I'm trying to figure out a few things. First, what exactly was the fabric used for the sides, is it like a bed sheet or more of a cotton cloth??? Also, how does your design work versus Hellscreams concerning the light on top??? does it make a difference??? Can't wait to start the contest!!!

Hiya Squallers,
For my box the sides are covered in a sort of shiny gossamer fabric. I can't tell you too much more about it, it was just something my sister had pack-ratted away. Really anything that's white and thin enough to let light come through should work. Of course, you don't HAVE to shine the light through fabric, but it seems to help soften the glare from the naked lightbulbs and spread the light around more evenly. All of the pre-fabricated product photography tents I've seen for sale online seem to follow this philosophy, as well (they're made from nylon).

I've gotten pretty good results with my lights-on-the-side configuration, but so far all I've done are simple package shots. For the more elegant, soft-shadowed Hellscream333-styled loose figure shots I'm going to need that extra light, so I plan to cut a hole in the top for a third light. What does the box you used for the last contest look like?
